“If a stone is dropped into hell, it will keep falling for 70 years before reaching the bottom of hell” (ibn Hibban)
Walls of Hell
The prophet said
“Four walls have been surrounding Hell, The width of every wall is a distance of 40 years walking”
Fire and Darkness of Hell
The prophet said
“Hell was blown for one thousand years so that its fire turned red, it was then blown for another thousand years so that it became white, it was again blown for one thousand years and it turned black. At present Hell looks black and dark”
The Levels of Hell
There are 7 levels to Hell
As Allaah says:
"Verily the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths [grade] of the Fire"(4:145)
• 7th level -For monotheists (is the belief in the existence of one deity or God ) (Top of hell) called Jahanam (For Muslims)
• 6th level -For Christians called Sa’ah
• 5th level -For Jews it is called al-Hutamah
• 4th level – For Iblis and associates , called Nati
• 3rd level - the Magians (who worship fire) in the fifth level called Saqar
• 2nd level -the polytheist Arabs (belief in many gods) in the sixth level called al-Jaheem
• 1st level - the hypocrites (is the act of pretending to have morals or virtues that one does not truly possess or practice) in the seventh level called al-Hawiyah (bottom of hell)
• Lowest point of hell is the hottest
• The levels in Hell go down
• The levels in paradise go up
Special neck of Hell
Prophet said
“On the day of resurrection, a neck will come out from Hell, Having two eyes, two ears and one tongue to see, hear and speak. It will say that it has been appointed on three kinds of persons”:
a)on every rebellious and stubborn b)on everyone associating with Allah c)On a painter of picture (Tirmidhi)
Snakes and scorpions of Hell
The prophet said
“Verily, there are long necked camel like snakes in Hell that anyone of them if sting a Hellish person will feel pain for 40 years” (Ahmad)
Women the main dwellers in Hell Hadith
"...Then I saw the (Hell) Fire, and I have never before, seen such a horrible sight as that, and I saw that the majority of its dwellers were women." The people asked, "O Allah's Apostle! What is the reason for that?" He replied, "Because of their ungratefulness." It was said. "Do they disbelieve in Allah (are they ungrateful to Allah)?" He replied, "They are not thankful to their husbands and are ungrateful for the favors done to them. Even if you do good to one of them all your life, when she seems some harshness from you, she will say, "I have never seen any good from you.' " Hadith - Sahih Bukhari 4:464, Narrated 'Abdullah bin Abbas , see also Bukhari 4:464, 7:124
99 dragons over the unbelievers grave Hadith
Allah's Messenger said:
There dominate ninety-nine dragons over the unbeliever in the grave. They (constantly) bite him and sting him till there comes the hour (of resurrection). (These dragons are so poisonous) that if one of them exhales on the Earth, no verdure (green vegetation) will ever grow upon it. Hadith - Reported by Darimi, Narrated Abu Sa'id , Tirmidhi
Paradise and Hell Have Already Been Created
"...for Paradise as wide as are the heavens and the earth, prepared for al-Muttaqun" (3:133)
Children of believers in paradise being cared for now by Prophet Ibrahim
Prophet (saw) said,
"The children of the believers are in Paradise, being cared for by Ibraahim (as) [and in the narration of Abu Nu'aym, ad-Dawylami, and Ibn Asakir it adds- "and Sarah, until they give them back to their parents on the day of Resurrection"
- This makes it clear that souls will enter Paradise before the Day of Resurrection.
The Keepers of Hell
Standing over Hell are MIGHTY and STERN angels who never disobey Allaah subhaanahu wa ta'ala Who has created them. They do whatever He commands them, as Allaah subhaanahu wa ta'ala says:
"O you who believe! Save yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is men and stones, over which are [appointed] angels stern [and] severe, who flinch not [from executing] the Commands they receive from Allaah, but do [precisely what] they are commanded." (66:6)
Their number is nineteen as Allaah (swt) says:
"Soon I will cast him into Hellfire. And what will explain to you what Hellfire is? Naught does it permit to endure, and naught does it leave alone! Darkening and changing the colour of man! Over it are nineteen [angels as guardians and keepers of Hell]" (74:26-30)
The Location of Hell
- Only Allah Knows
The Vast Extent of Hell
Hell is huge and vast and immensely deep, as is proven by several things:
"On the Day when We will say to Hell: "Are you filled?" It will say: "Are there any more to come?" (50:30)
"We were with the Messenger of Allaah (saw) and we heard the sound of something falling. The Prophet (saw) said, "Do you know what that was?" We said, "Allaah and His Messenger know best". He said, "That was a stone that was thrown into Hell seventy years ago and it was falling through Hell until now". (Muslim, Kitaab al-Jannah, Baab fi shiddat haar an-naar, 4/2184 no. 2844)
The great number of angels who will bring Hell forth on the Day of Resurrection.
The Prophet (saw) said,
"Hell will be brought forth that Day by means of seventy thousand ropes, each of which will be held by seventy thousand angels." • (reported by Muslim from 'Abdullaah ibn Mas'ud, 4/2184 no.2842)
We can only image the vastness of this terrifying creation that requires such a huge number of strong and powerful angels whose strength is known only to Allaah!
The Gates of Hell
Allaah has told us that Hell has seven gates, as He (swt) said:
"And surely, Hell is the promised place for them all. It [Hell] has seven gates, for each of these gates is a [special] class [of sinners] assigned". (15:43-44)
- When the disbelievers come to Hell, its gates will be opened, and they will enter it, to remain there forever.
The gates of Hell may be opened and closed before the Day of Judgement. The Prophet (Saw) told us that the gates of Hell are locked during the month of Ramadhan. the Prophet (saw) said:
"When the first night of Ramadhan comes, the Shayaateen and evil jinns are chained up. The gates of Hell are closed and not one of them is opened. The gates of Paradise are opened and not one of them is closed." (Ibid, p.66)
The Fuel of Hell
Stones and the rebellious disbelievers are the fuel of Hell, as Allaah says:
"O you who believe! Save yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is men and stones!" (66:6)
The Prophet (saw) told us:
"Fire as we know it is one-seventieth part of the Fire of Hell." Someone said, "O Messenger of Allaah (saw), it is enough as it is!" He said, "It [the fire of Hell] is as if sixty nine equal portions were added to the fire as we know it." (al-Bukhaari)
This Fire never dies down, no matter how much time passes:
"So taste you [the results of your evil actions]; no increase shall We give you, except in torment". (78:30)
The disbelievers will not taste the luxury of respite, and the torment will not be lessened for them no matter how long it lasts:
"Their torment shall not be lightened nor shall they be helped". (2:86)
The Fire is rekindled every day
the Prophet said, "When it becomes very hot, wait until it cools down to pray, because the intense heat is a breeze from Hell".
Hell can Speak and See
"When it [Hell] sees them from a far place, they will hear its raging and roaring". (25:12)
How Hell Affects this Earth and its Inhabitants
al-Bukhaari reports in his saheeh that Abu Hurayrah said:
"Hell complained to its Rabb, saying "O my Rabb, some parts of me have consumed others." So He allowed it to exhale twice, once in the winter and once in the summer. That is why you find extreme heat (in the summer) and extreme cold (in the winter)".
Those Who Will Not Remain in Hell Forever
If muslims sins outweight their good deeds they will go hell for a period of time to wipe of their sins and then enter jannah. May Allah save us from entering jahannam at all.
The Vast Number of People in Hell
Many texts indicate the large numbers of the children of Aadam will enter Hell, and the few who will enter Paradise.
Many texts indicate that nine hundred and ninety-nine out of every thousand of the children of Aadam will enter Hell, and only one (in a thousand) will enter Paradise.
Most of Those Who Enter Hell Will be Women
the Prophet (saw) said, "I saw Hell and I saw that most of its inhabitants were women".
The reason why women will be more in hell told by prophet…
the Prophet (saw) said, "O women give in charity, for I have seen that you form the majority of the people of Hell." They asked, "Why is that so, O Messenger of Allaah (saw)?" He said, "Because you curse too much and are ungrateful for good treatment".
This does not contradict the fact that every man in Paradise will have more than one wife. What is referred to by the women who will be the majority of the inhabitants of Hell is women who are descendants of Aadam: the inhabitants of Paradise will have many wives from among al-Hoor al-'Iyn.
The Huge Size of the People of Hell
"The distance between the shoulders of the Kaafir in Hell will be like three day's travelling for a fast rider" (Muslim, 4/290)
The Food, Drink and Clothing of the People of Hell
Allah says
"..[they] will be given to drink, boiling water, so that it cuts up their bowels [to pieces]" (47:15)
How to Save Oneself From the Fire
"The Messenger of Allaah (saw) said, "By Allaah (swt), Allaah will never thrown one whom He loves into the Fire" (sahih, See Sahih al-Jaami' 6/104)
-Fasting is also a source of protection from the Fire, as Ahmad reports in al-Musnad and al-Bayhaqi in Shu'ab al-Imaan, with a hasan isnaad from Jaabir ibn 'Abdullaah:
"The Prophet (saw) said, "Allaah (swt) says, "Fasting is a shield with which one may protect oneself from the Fire". (Sahih al-Jaami, 4/114)
-Fear of Allaah – Make dua and weep infront of Allah -Jihaad – fighting in the path of Allah is not literally meaning fighting but also meaning to strive to make allah happy. -This you can do buy giving charity to feed the poor. -This you can do buy educating others and bringing others into islam.
The Believers Will Be Purified Before They Enter Paradise
After the Believers have passed over as-Siraat (the bridge over Hell), they will be kept on a bridge between Paradise and Hell, where they will be purified by means of their settling any wrongs that existed between any of them in this world. THen when they enter paradise they will be pure and clean, none of them bearing any ill-will towards another or demanding anything of another.
Our Prophet (saw) will be the first to ask for the gates of paradise to be opened, after Aadam, the father of mankind, and all the other great Prophets refuse this task
