Those who are qualified to give Zakat - have Nisab - but are not strong enough to fast, due to old age, long-term illness, should give Fidya for each fast missed.
Fidya for each missed day of fasting for those living in the UK is £3 according to Hanafi school of thought or £6 according toShaafi and other major schools of thought.
"[Observing Saum (fasts)] for a fixed number of days, but if any of you is ill or on a journey, the same number (should be made up) from other days. And as for those who can fast with difficulty, they have (a choice either to fast or) to feed a Miskîn (poor person) (for every day). But whoever does good of his own accord, it is better for him. And that you fast, it is better for you if only you know." (Al-Baqarah 2:184)
What is the Cost of Fidya?
The Fidya for each fast missed is either to feed a poor person two meals in a day, or to give whole wheat, which is enough to feed a poor person twice in a day (1/2 Saa per Hanafi school of thought, or 1 Saa per Shaafi and other schools of thought). (1 Sa = 3 Kilograms approx.)
It is important that Fidya is calculated based on the local prices of whole wheat in the place where you live. The Fidya in the United Kingdom is £3 by the Hanafi school of thought, and £6 according to the Shaafi and other schools of thought.
